How to Replace A Kitchen Faucet

Is it even possible to work in your kitchen without a faucet in your sink? If so then the sink will be of no use. Again with a damaged faucet, you do not work so easily. Because sometimes the faucet can leak and there is wastage of water. So you better replace the old one with a new faucet. But how to replace kitchen faucet?

It can seem difficult to you to replace an old one. And it is the difficult portion to replace old one than keeping a new faucet. But if you know the process very well then this will be very easy.

Steps on how to replace kitchen faucet

Step-1: Remove Supply Lines

Turning off the water is the first thing to do. Then remove supply lines from old faucet carefully. Before buying a new one, check that if there have shutoff valves beneath your sink. Confirm they are working. Shut and turn on valves to check working of hot and cold water faucet.

Supply lines made of stainless steel are rupture free, so I recommend to buy this. Use a basin wrench to remove supply lines. A basket or pot can be held. Some water can come out from lines as you remove supply lines. Old chrome plated lines create corrosion. If you have those removing them is better.

  • Shutoff valves before removing supply lines.
  • Do not try to remove supply line without the wrench.

Step-2: Remove old kitchen faucet

Unscrew bolts of the old faucet by using a screw. These hold faucets into its place and hold up tightly. So you can’t unscrew these empty handed. Then you need to remove these from its place. Soap container and locking nut removal are necessary.

  • Like supply lines, remove old faucet using the screw.
  • Remove sprayer from the sink.

Step-3: Replacing a new faucet

Sometimes there is separate sprayer attachment in a new faucet. With this, it is difficult to fit the new one. So using a screw, loose and remove the sprayer attachment too. Important thing is, check how many holes there are under the sink.

Type of faucet depends on how many holes are present there. If there are 3 or 4 holes, you can replace the old one with a faucet which has just one hole. But it is not possible to fit a faucet of 3 or 4 holes in a one-hole system sink.

Use rubber or plastic gasket over the holes. Or in place of these, use plumber’s putty to cover up. Firmly place it over the holes. It doesn’t matter if there are one or four holes. Only matters to place this in the place. Thread screws into threaded ring till it is one-fourth inch away from the sink.

Fit washer underneath the sink. Also, thread locking nuts using screw under the sink. Ensure soap container is screwed tightly. Then attach a hose to the supply pipe so you can move it and use it easily. Pull down the weight onto the hose and connect the ends.  Attach nuts by a screw after that.

Then connect hot and cold water supply lines. These should not interfere with the hose line. Connect then, but it is better not so much tight.

  • Apply sufficient amount of putty.
  • Putty should apply around edges. Then insert into a hole which is farthest from the center.

Step-4: Final Checking

Turn on the supply line and check if there is any leak. Clear line-removing aerator to clean up the line. You should not over tight the line. But if necessary and the water leaks you can tight lines. In loose connections use the penetrating oil. So I think you’re now clear about how to replace kitchen faucet properly.

  • Using pliers, turn the aerator in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Tightly connect all the connections so there is no leakage of water.

Final Verdict

So the answer of how to replace kitchen faucet is not going to be a big deal. You can easily replace an old one. But I suggest, you better care about some matters. Solid brass faucets are more durable. These last longer than the chrome plated ones. There will be no leaking in solid brass faucets are you will face fewer problems.

For light duty, you can use faucets which are chrome plates. You can use these if you have a side sink which you are not using frequently. You can replace some faucets’ parts so you need to know about the faucet briefly. So you can replace if any problem arises.

With the faucet, also have a look into the supply lines. Because sometimes there is no damage in the faucet but in the supply line.
